The study was conducted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLF) and the Graduate Program in Social Science on Development, Agriculture, and Society (CPDA) of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). The event will also be streamed live on RLF’s YouTube channel. The first part of the investigation aimed to map and critically analyze the energy transition processes presented by businesses and governments to solve the global climate crisis.

The study is focused on major onshore and offshore wind farm projects in the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Sul. It also looks into lithium and aluminum mining projects, essential elements for the so-called energy transition. The demand for lithium could increase by more than 8,000 percent, as it is used to produce electric vehicle batteries

The second part of the study mapped 107 private projects that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked with deforestation and forest degradation in Brazil. The study introduces the main contradictions and issues of the continuously expanding market (whether voluntary or regulated).

The study also features forest protection actions in Pará, as it is one of the main areas labeled as decarbonized, especially the Biofílica Ambipar Environment projects.

The main findings of the mapping will be presented by the coordinators of the study, Elisangela Soldateli Paim—Coordinator of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Energy and Climate for Latin America Program —and Fabrina Furtado—Professor of the Graduate Program in Social Science on Development, Agriculture, and Society (UFRRJ/CPDA).

David Williams—the Coordinator of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation International Climate Justice Program—will take part in the event remotely, providing a brief international overview on the topic.

The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is a German nonprofit foundation connected to the Die Linke party.
